“THERE ARE DECADES WHERE nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen”. These words by the Russian revolutionary Vladimir Lenin offer a fitting description of the cataclysmic events witnessed since February 24. In the early hours of that day, the largest country in the world launched a strategic ground offensive against the largest country in Europe. Read more

Amidst the unfolding Russian invasion of Ukraine, the European Intelligence Academy (EIA), an initiative of the Research Institute for European and American Studies (RIEAS), has launched its latest project, the EIA Global Watch. The EIA Global Watch is a collaboration between the EIA and the Intelligence Operations Command Center (IOCC) at Coastal Carolina University (CCU) in the United States.

This new project brings together 30 analysts in the IOCC’s Applied Intelligence internship. The internship provides training in analytical tradecraft through the real-time monitoring of current events. The project consists of six Critical Mission Centers (CMCs), each managed by a director, who supervises a support staff of senior analysts. CMCs are tasked with monitoring a developing topic on a real-time basis. They also issue periodic written and oral intelligence products, which contain current- and estimative-analysis assessments of their topics.

Currently, all CMCs have been assigned to follow the fast-changing war in Ukraine. Prior to the onset of the war, they produced current-intelligence products and trend analyses on a variety of topics, to include the civil unrest in Sudan and Kazakhstan, economic trends in Turkey and China, as well as the latest COVID-19 trends in the United States.

The EIA Global Watch project is supervised by EIA Director, Dr. John Nomikos, and managed by EIA Deputy Director for North America, Dr. Joseph Fitsanakis. RIEAS wishes to thank the IOCC and CCU for their contribution to the work of the EIA. Click on to read more

Cyprus's geographic location is of great importance not only for the Mediterranean region but is also critical for international security. The question is: How could a small state be so important for regional and international stability in terms of security? A simplistic answer would be that at a macro-level, Taiwan plays an also disproportionate role in world politics because of its importance for both China and the U.S. Being at the crossroads among Europe, Africa, and Asia, Cyprus is an important security and energy hub and its foreign policy contributes to the peace and stability of several subregions such as MENA and Southeastern Mediterranean. What is the perception of superpowers, great powers, and middle powers towards Cyprus, and what Cyprus offers in regional stability? ... Read more

Iran-backed Houthi rebels have carried out two attacks by drones and missiles against targets in the UAE. The attacks are a serious escalation and expansion of the battlefield that has so far focused on Yemen and attacks on targets in Saudi Arabia by the Houthis.
The Iranian-backed Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for the attacks, but it seems that the Houthis would not have carried out such attacks with regional strategic implications without Iran's consent or perhaps even under its direction.... Read more
