Given the economic malaise of the Eurozone, speculation over whether Greece will exit or not takes full stage over the more insidious impacts of such crises.  Looking around Europe, right-wing extremism is on the ascendancy against a backdrop of anger, resentment and finger pointing over who is at fault.  As a result, xenophobic if not outright neo-Nazi activity is now prevalent in countries victimized by the original version several decades earlier.  Since we have been there before, the issue now arises whether we recognize and give pause to the implications of future economic decisions on the people.  Unless it addresses the sentiment on the street, history teaches us that charismatic people waiting in the wings have a ready list of scapegoats to bear this brunt instead....... The majority of people in Greece today realize that the country's core problem is the absence of governing -- whether there is a government in place or not.

The recent first round of the French elections resulted in vote tallies very similar to those scored by Greek political parties in the May 6 election. The key difference though between France and Greece  is that the former had a government in place following its second round of elections, two weeks after the first, while Greece still lingers in a political vacuum as its political parties quarrel over who can form a government. Imagine the instability and the panic in France itself and across Europe if the French were to emulate the Greeks. But France possesses a firm political system that provides administrations of steady life cycles, while Greece has nothing of the kind.

The National Guard, the Armed Forces of the Republic of Cyprus have diachronically constituted the cornerstone in regards to the long struggle for national and physical survival of Cypriot Hellenism. National Guard is the spearhead in the defence of the Republic and must function as a strong, reliable and effective deterrent force against any third country or any non-state actor(s) that attempt to undermine the interests of the Republic of Cyprus.  Over time, well-trained as well as strategically and operationally sufficient armed forces function as the strongest multiplier effect of the State and their most important role is to support the implementation of the strategic planning of governments as well as the implementation of the state’s external policies. This article will attempt to shed light on the serious defects in regards to the public display and communication policies of the Armed Forces and the Intelligence Service of the Republic of Cyprus and finally proceed with particular recommendations that will enable these Agencies to keep up with the developments and trends of the 21st century.

Setting the scene

The pressures to migrate from the peripheral to the core countries are augmenting both on the supply and demand sides. On the supply side rampant political and economic crises along with the lack of prospects for a better life force people to move. As a result and as far as Greece is concerned this surge of immigration especially during the course of the past decade has brought Greece before a difficult and demanding situation that is now imperative to be dealt with by all parties concerned....  Read more

The Mediterranean Council for Intelligence Studies (MCIS) is proud to announce the release of the “MCIS Yearbook 2012”. The Yearbook is the result of an extended engagement of Mediterranean countries and international scholars in a joint effort to advance graduate and postgraduate education and research in the field of Intelligence and Security studies, and to develop regional academic networking. The Yearbook reflects diverse theoretical approaches towards intelligence and security studies. The first issue contains scientific contributions in the following two areas of study: A) for the section on “Intelligence in action” we have decided for this year to focus it on cyber security and cyber defence, with interventions by Prof. Joseph Fitsanakis & Dr. Micah-Sage Bolden, Dr. Andrew Liaropoulos, and Mr. Anthimos Alexandros Tsirigotis; B) for the part on “Intelligence studies in the Mediterranean region”, we have chosen an interesting analysis on the development of intelligence studies in France, by Dr. Eric Denécé.......  Read more

Read more

Oct 14- It is official: The brutal austerity being forced on Greece constitutes genocide. A report appearing in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet reveals that Greeks are “losing their lives” because of the cuts in health care that are being dictated by the Troika, the debt collectors of the European Commission, the European Central Bank, and the International Monetary Fund....
